Introducing B-Side Breakdowns: every critic, one score

Every album gets one page with what the critics said, every score converted to the same 0 to 100 scale, and one number we call the Breakdown.

B-Side Breakdowns is live. Every album gets one page that gathers what the critics said and boils it down to a single score out of 100.

Launch day by the numbers: 45% of albums score 75 or higher, the average Breakdown is a C-minus (72), 7.6% of reviews give a perfect score, and 4.4% of albums earn an A-Side.
How a Breakdown is made: 4 out of 5 becomes 80, 8.5 out of 10 becomes 85, a B+ becomes 88 and 72 out of 100 stays 72. Averaged, they make a Breakdown of 81, a B-minus, with 75% approval.

Stars, letter grades, scores out of 10 and scores out of 100 all convert to the same scale and average into the Breakdown. Approval and agreement sit right beside it, so you can tell at a glance whether the critics lined up or fought about it.

What's inside: A-Sides, the critics' top tier; New this Friday, every new album with a review all release weekend; pages for every critic and outlet; and By the Numbers, charts on how critics score.

Start with the A-Sides for the records critics agree on, or come back on a release weekend and watch New this Friday fill in as the first reviews land.

Most generous outlets by share of reviews at 75 or higher: Entertainment Weekly 95%, Robert Christgau 94%, The A.V. Club 92%. Hardest to win over: Slant 24%, PopMatters 33%, Rolling Stone 33%. All reviews on the site: 56%.

Entertainment Weekly liked 95% of the albums it reviewed. Slant liked 24%. Every outlet and every critic has a page of its own, so you can find the ones whose taste matches yours.

How the grades fall: A 6%, B 22%, C 35%, D 24%, F 13% of albums.

A C is the most common grade on the site, and only 6% of albums earn an A.

Average Breakdown by decade: 1960s 90, 1970s 84, 1980s 80, 1990s 76, 2000s 70, 2010s 71, 2020s 74.

Older records average higher, because the albums critics still revisit decades later are the ones people kept.

The back catalog is still filling in, with thousands more albums being added over the coming weeks. If a record you love is missing or a score looks off, reply to this email or leave a comment. We read all of it.

Thanks for being here for the launch.
