In the title track of her sophomore EP, Ella Jinks crafts a haunting exploration of self-sabotage and emotional inertia. The 24-year-old singer-songwriter’s rich, sonorous vocals take center stage, carrying the weight of personal revelation as she examines the paralysis of negative behavioral patterns.

Working with producer Matt Ingram (Florence + The Machine, Laura Marling), Jinks has evolved beyond the skeletal intimacy of her 2023 debut. “The In Between” showcases fuller arrangements with elegant vocal harmonies and evocative string work from Tom Hobden (Noah and the Whale, Gang of Youths), while maintaining her voice as the gravitational center. The production choices reflect the song’s thematic tension – moments of stark vulnerability contrasted against sweeping instrumental builds that mirror the internal struggle of wanting to change while remaining stuck.

The BRIT School graduate’s songwriting draws from a deep well of influences, including Laura Marling, Joni Mitchell, and Lianne La Havas, yet maintains its distinctiveness. Her bluesy, soulful indie-folk approach carries an old-soul quality that belies her years, while her lyrical perspective remains firmly rooted in the contemporary experience of young adulthood.

“Writing this song was a moment of realization for me of just how stagnant I felt in various parts of my life at the time,” Jinks reveals, and this raw honesty permeates every aspect of the track. The arrangement, supported by bassist Chris Dagger (The Staves, Freya Ridings), creates a sonic landscape that feels both intimate and expansive – much like the internal world of self-reflection the song explores.

“The In Between” serves as both confessional and catharsis, demonstrating Jinks’ ability to transform personal struggle into universal resonance. It’s a masterful preview of her upcoming EP, suggesting an artist who’s found her voice not just as a singer, but as a chronicler of the complex journey toward self-acceptance.
