Way Too Late Top Albums of 2017

I’m not going to spend a ton of time rationalizing these choices. Some of this list was picked by me, some of it was picked by Seth, and all of it is 3 months behind everyone else’s list. So what do you think? Did we nail it with the supreme ability to have hindsight?

10. Turn Out The Lights – Julien Baker

Notable Lyrics: “Sour Breath”

I know you do better when you’re by yourself
Free from the weight of my dirt poor health
New drugs to fix all my missing cells
Didn’t bring it up, cause I’ve done so well this week
And I thought that if I tried a little bit harder you’d change your mind
I’ve still got nowhere to be, and I don’t do too well; nobody’s worried
When nobody’s worried about me

9. Flower Boy – Tyler the Creator

Notable Lyrics: “November”

What if Clancy fuckin’ me over?
What if ‘Who Dat Boy’ is rhetorical and this shit is over?
What if I’m hustling backwards?
What if my accountant ain’t payin’ my taxes?
Fillin’ his pockets and IRS show up asking me questions
I couldn’t answer ’cause I was too busy tryna make classics
Boy ain’t got no motherfucking classics
What if my music too weird for the masses?
And I’m only known for tweets more than beats or
All my day ones turn to three, fours ’cause of track seven
Fuck, what if I get stuck?
What if I got comfortable? I gotta keep it buck fifty
What if I lost it all and ended up back in Ladera
At them shitty apartments that’s across the Bank of America
Damn, I would be hurtin’

8. Sleep Well Beast – The National

Notable Lyrics: “Day I Die”

I get a little punchy with the vodka just like my great uncle Valentine Jester did
But he had to deal with those people like you who made no goddamn common sense
I’d rather walk all the way home right now than to spend one more second in this place
I’m exactly like you Valentine, just come outside and leave with me
Let’s just get high enough to see our problems
Let’s just get high enough to see our fathers’ houses

7. Aromanticism – Moses Sumney

Notable Lyrics: “Plastic”

I know what it is to be broken and be bold
Tell you that my silver is gold
Though we’re much too old for make believe
And I know what it’s like to behold and not be held
Funny how a stomach unfed
Seems satisfied ’cause it’s swell and swollen

6. Care – David Bazan

Notable Lyrics: “Disappearing Ink”

A false binary when it’s probably something in between
Pierce the yolk and watch it bleed together
Heavy things we think written in disappearing ink
I might be down right now, but nothing’s forever

5. Pure Comedy – Father John Misty

Notable Lyrics: “Leaving L.A.”

My first memory of music’s from
The time at JCPenney’s with my mom
The watermelon candy I was choking on
Barbara screaming, “Someone help my son!”
I relive it most times the radio’s on
That “tell me lies, sweet little white lies” song
That’s when I first saw the comedy won’t stop for
Even little boys dying in department stores

4. A Black Mile to the Surface – Manchester Orchestra

Notable Lyrics: “The Silence”

There is nothing you keep, there is only your reflection
There was nothing but quiet retractions
And families pleading, “Don’t look in that cabinet
There’s far more bad than there’s good, I don’t know how it got there”
That was something your father had burned in me
Twenty hours out of Homestake eternity
“You can go anywhere but you are where you came from”
Little girl, you are cursed by my ancestry
There is nothing but darkness and agony
I can not only see, but you stopped me from blinking
Let me watch you as close as a memory
Let me hold you above all the misery
Let me open my eyes and be glad that I got here

3. DAMN. – Kendrick Lamar

Notable Lyrics: “XXX feat. U2”

He said: “K-Dot, can you pray for me?
It been a fucked up day for me
I know that you anointed, show me how to overcome.”
He was lookin’ for some closure
Hopin’ I could bring him closer
To the spiritual, my spirit do know better, but I told him
“I can’t sugarcoat the answer for you, this is how I feel:
If somebody kill my son, that mean somebody gettin’ killed.”
Tell me what you do for love, loyalty, and passion of
All the memories collected, moments you could never touch

2. A Crow Looked At Me – Mount Eerie

Notable Lyrics: “Real Death”

Death is real
Someone’s there and then they’re not
And it’s not for singing about
It’s not for making into art
When real death enters the house, all poetry is dumb
When I walk into the room where you were
And look into the emptiness instead
All fails

My knees fail
My brain fails
Words fail

1. Science Fiction – Brand New

Notable Lyrics: “137”

Before the garden
When you were all alone
You made the atom
Was that some inside joke

Open the gates
And then conceal the path
Let’s load the gun
And see how long they last

[Radio comm sample]
“There goes the siren again
Oh, there, goes another round I gotta- uh, go to a bunker now”

[Chorus]
Let’s go ring and run the bunkers
Baby won’t you come outside?
Across the sea the birds are free
Let’s watch them scream across the sky

Let’s all go and meet our maker
They don’t care whose side you’re on
We’re so afraid, I prayed and prayed
Before I learned to love the bomb
